On 6 June we implemented the second phase of the action.
This action involved the organization of a workshop and was an extension of the first phase as it analyzed the concerns expressed by farmers in the first phase.
In particular, Dr. Alexandros Papachatzis, gave a speech on "Revival of abandoned olive groves" and respectively Dr. Nanos D. George on "Good practices and innovations in olive cultivation" and Dr. Tsitsigiannis Dimitrios on "Epidemiology and integrated treatment of cycloconium".
In the course of the workshop, RNAi technology was analyzed and explained through a presentation by Dr. Konstantinos Mathiopoulos entitled "RNAi technology is the most promising approach for the management of insect and fungal diseases in recent decades", in order to make the transition to the Project we are developing this year easier and more understandable.
The viewers consisted of undergraduate students, graduate students, postgraduate students and professors from Agricultural Departments and the Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology, while the workshop was also attended by farmers and agronomists. There was also the possibility for both face-to-face and online attendance of the workshop.
In the end, the undergraduate student of the Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology of the University of Thessaly, Nefeli - Maria Stoupa, gave a presentation on the project that our team is developing this year, with special emphasis on the solution we propose, which aims to use the bacterial mediated RNAi technology for the treatment of the fungus Verticillium dahliae.
At the end, questions were given to check if our project was understood.

Alexandros Papachatzis, Professor at Horticulture and Chairman at the Department of Agriculture and Agrotechnology at the University of Thessaly, helped in the implementation of the action and made sure that the farmers understood the basic cultivation measures that must be followed to protect their crops.
Our action was in the form of an open dialogue in order to emphasize the questions and queries of farmers regarding the management of their crops. For the correct and functional application of the formulation we are developing this year, it is necessary to emphasize the needs of the farmers themselves; therefore, the first phase was closed with questions for them so that the farmers are facilitated towards the use of our formulation.
After the successful completion of the first phase, we proceeded to the second phase, which included a workshop on "Fungal Diseases of the Olive Tree.".

The method of cultivation of microorganisms and the protocols followed for the processing of laboratory
techniques were also presented. In the second part of the activity we showed the children the basic laboratory
equipment, i.e. conical flasks, petri dishes with nutrient agar as well as inoculating loops. Specifically, we
presented them with three conical flasks of the fungus Penicillium purpurogenum and two other conic flasks with
the Verticillium dahliae fungus. We also showed them a spruce in a petri dish, Rhodotorula glutinis and some
empty dishes that contained only nutrients. In the empty dishes we let the students experiment themselves and
test the laboratory technique for the bacterial inoculation by using an inoculating loop. We also showed them
photos of some specimens under a microscope, such as Penicillium purpurogenum and some yeasts. The action ended
with the sharing of questionnaires to see what they got from our information.

This year's mission of the iGEM Thessaly team has come to an end! After 9 months of tireless and painstaking
work, our 11 team members are ready to pass the baton to the next students. We are positive that the foundation
that all iGEM Thessaly members have laid since 2019 will help the next teams to achieve even higher goals! But
let's take a brief look at the experience of the Paris competition...
The Grand Jamboree was held on 2-5 November at Paris Expo Porte de Versailles. Our team, competing in the
Bioremediation category, had a permanent exhibition booth next to other projects in the same category.
The first 3 days of the competition gave us the opportunity to communicate our idea to other teams, judges,
academics and entrepreneurs. We met a multitude of people with whom we exchanged views, ideas and suggestions
for improving aspects of our research project.
In particular, the audience showed great interest in our business plan, in the BioArt exhibition that we
organized in order to unite the world of art with that of science, in the design and operation of the microbial
consortium that we researched in the laboratory, as well as in the 3D model of the bioreactor that we presented
in our exhibition booth. Our team was also invited to present the project in detail in front of the public, as
you can see in the photos below.
Our most important obligation in the first days was the evaluation of our project by a team of competition
judges. There, after briefly presenting key points we wanted to emphasize, the judges proceeded to ask a series
of questions in order to evaluate in detail our performance in all the subcategories we competed in. The
experience was very stressful, but our team fully coped with the judges' questions and returned to the
competition activities with more confidence in the project!
Alongside the competitive part of the Jamboree, a variety of talks, seminars and interactive events were held.
Here it is worth mentioning that our team claimed the first place... in a game of musical chairs! The prize: A
pack of coffee! On the last day of the competition, the results were announced and our team celebrated with
great joy their achievements!
Apart from the unprecedented and unforgettable experience of the competition, our trip included many excursions
to the touristic city of Paris, where we got a little taste of French culture, art, architecture and especially
(!!!) cuisine.

experience, as well as we owe a big thank you to everyone who assisted our effort. But let us begin with the
results of our participation in the competition. Our team, competing in the category of Bioremediation, was
voted among the top 10 teams worldwide (overgraduates category) and received a gold medal for overall project
performance. Moreover, iGEM Thessaly received a nomination for the best project in the Bioremediation category.
But the achievements do not stop here! This year, our team applied for 3 specialized awards and received
nominations in all of them! These were:
Best New Basic Part
Best Entrepreneurship
Best Education
Finally, our team was nominated for the "Best Wiki" award.
This year's performance reflects once again the power of collaboration and effective guidance, as well as the
dedication of all members, new and older, to accomplish a common goal.

Plastic Wars: Debate Plastics versus Bioplastics
Can plastic ever go green? Have you ever wondered if our beloved plastics could have a place on a
sustainable planet? Plastic, an integral part of our lives, is under scrutiny due to its environmental
impact. On the other hand, a new alternative and ecological solution is entering the global market:
bioplastic. But is it the cure-all we were looking for? How can we balance the usability of conventional
plastics with the desire to reduce waste? Can bioplastics really reduce our carbon footprint or do they
present their own challenges?...

through a game. From March 27 through March 29, our team participated,
along with Thessaly Science Festival, in the virtual Athens Science
Festival with an interactive action aiming to guide the students in
their journeyinto the world of Biology. Through crosswords, we dared

Theatrical action
In 2020, we as team iGEM Thessaly, devised a project based on the
study and diagnosis of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). Besides
research and laboratory work themselves, our team also worked hard on
communicating our project, both to a broader and a more specialized
audience. Through several actions, it was critical for the success of
our project that we made a point of underlining certain aspects, such
as the importance of the disease, the means of its manifestation and
the ways in which the disease affects the patients’ daily life. In the
framework of communicating our project to the world, and especially
people who probably have never got in touch with such a matter, our
team decided to jump into action to attract in a creative and
educational way, the youngest members of our society, children. Under
the auspices of the “Without Omega” theatrical workshop and using as a
tool the pedagogical aspect of theater, an experiential action took
place, where children got in touch with the importance of diet in our
lives, as well as the relation between diet and the disease. The
action started out with a conversation between the children and the
theatrologists Antonia Magou and Nantia Aggeloudi, who introduced them
in the topic of the gathering and asked the children to draw a picture
of what comes to their mind when they hear of the disease. Afterwards
they wrote a message for the children who suffer from IBD and then
followed a conversation on how a person could be living with the
disease. For the iGEM team it was essential that the children become
familiar with the subject, grow their empathy and imagine how it would
be like to face a problem which is invisible to others, and how
problems like this make patients feel lonely and undergo
(self)isolation. For the end, we prepared a last surprise: the young,
would have the chance to express themselves through their
participation in a small theatrical sketch, comprised of different
scenes from the everyday life of a child with IBD. In this way, the
children who took part in the action, had the opportunity to literally
put themselves in the shoes of people who suffer from IBD. Last year’s
action has not only inspired the children who took part in it, but
also the iGEM team itself. Getting to know from a personal experience
the importance of human contact and free expression of feelings and
ideas, we, the iGEM team members, start a second year of actions, full
of energy and excitement, this time aiming to surpass, not only our
age and social limits, but also the limits of ourselves.

Living with IBD
IBD includes a group of autoimmune diseases and, thus, it is

essential fingerprint for a patient. Unfortunately, most people in our
country, Greece, tend to hide their condition due to the fear of
pitifulness and society’s lack of affection and understanding. So, we
decided to design a poster to boost people's morale. Let's strengthen
self-esteem and increase the self-confidence of people who suffer from
it!

Big Greek Meet Up 2020
Our team organized the online Big Greek MeetUp in 24-25-26 July 2020
for the Greek teams that are going to participate in the iGEM
competition in 2020. It, also, provided the opportunity for newly
formed teams from Greece and Cyprus (that are willing to participate
in the iGEM competition in 2021) to have a first experience with
Synthetic Biology in iGEM. The Meet Up began with lectures based on
Synthetic biology, followed by discussions on interesting and
interactive topics, covering all aspects of the competition, such as
graphic design, wiki management, and entrepreneurship in iGEM.
Finally, it concluded with small presentations of all the teams'
projects, as a first simulation of the presentations at the Giant
Jamboree.

Our team was in Technopolis, in Athens, from 3rd to 5th of April, to
participate in the Athens Science Festival 2019. There, we presented a
new game of Synthetic Biology, designed particularly for junior high
school and high school students. "SYNvivor" gave students the
opportunity to discover the world of Synthetic Biology in an active
and entertaining way, by combining mathematics, puzzles, and books,
while developing the spirit of collaboration to achieve their common
"final goal"; to bring the pieces of life together. As knowledge is a
two-way process, our team members received many lessons from the
students themselves, who, with their spirit and creativity, gave us
new ideas and suggestions for our next actions. You can find more
